Today's task and its purpose

How do we teach?

How do we learn?

3 stages of schema development

  • Experience - build initial connections through big aha’s (problem solving - types of activities - ST Math Games, manipulative activities)

  • Connect - increase the amount of connections of any new idea to existing ideas - types of activities - problem solving with lots of class discussion (academic discourse)

  • Practice - drill into the fine details of each “node” of a schema - skill building here is completely appropriate

A Math Topic - let's dig in

The place value is the position of each digit in a number. The place value of digits is determined as ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands and so on, based on their position in the number. For example, the place value of 1 in 1002 is thousands, i.e.1000.
